MBALE, UGANDA, The manager of YY Buses in Mbale, Mr. Abazi John, has refuted widespread social media reports claiming that all passengers perished in a fiery bus accident yesterday evening. Contrary to the rumors, only three individuals lost their lives, while 30 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The tragic incident occurred when the bus, en route to Mbale via the Katosi road, caught fire after the driver swerved to avoid a reckless boda boda rider who abruptly crossed its path. In the process, the driver lost control, causing the bus to overturn before bursting into flames. "The fire erupted quickly, but most passengers managed to escape,"Mr. Abazi stated. "Unfortunately, three people were trapped inside and could not be rescued in time. It is false that everyone died—this misinformation has caused unnecessary panic."
The manager further explained that the company opted for the Katosi route due to the poor state of the Mabira road, which is riddled with potholes and chronic traffic jams. Passengers often endure up to six hours on a journey that should take far less for a 223km distance.
Mr. Abazi urged the government to expedite road expansion efforts, particularly on the Mabira route, to prevent future accidents and ease travel for commuters. "Our drivers face immense challenges navigating these roads. Wider, well-maintained highways will save lives," he emphasized.
Meanwhile, survivors are being treated at nearby hospitals, with some reported in stable condition. Police and transport authorities have launched investigations into the exact cause of the accident.
As details emerge, YY Buses has pledged to cooperate fully with authorities and assist affected families. The public is advised to rely on official statements rather than unverified social media claims.
