KITGUM, UGANDA – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has led the nation in commemorating the 49th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Janani Luwum, using the solemn occasion to draw a stark contrast between principled leadership and the brutal authoritarianism of the Idi Amin era.

Israel has announced it will open the key Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt in the coming days to allow Palestinians to leave the territory.

Israeli military body Cogat said exits would be "facilitated through co-ordination with Egypt, following security approval by Israel and under the supervision of the European Union mission".

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a case related to millions of euros of illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi.

The Paris criminal court acquitted him of all other charges, including passive corruption and illegal campaign financing.
