Sexual Abuse Soars  - police report

The rate at which young girls and women’s rights are being violated in Kasese District western Uganda is worrying inflicting pain on the residents.

As a result, early marriages, Gender Based Violence, kidnap and disappearance grows along.     

Josephine Kabugho a resident of Bwera town explains that her daughter Masika Maikoline who has been selling her shop went missing since Wednesday last week.

Kabugho says that her daughter has been in senior three at St. Charles Secondary School and attributed her disappearance to Covid-19 lockdown that has left many school children desperate at homes.

James Bwambale, the father to the lost daughter says the family is worried as they cannot trace her whereabouts. He indicated that they have reported to police under SD REF 21/11/17/2020.   

Salt TV speaking to Rogers Keghah, the Programs Associate Uganda Network of Law and Ethics-UGANET on Violence against Women and Girls prevention (VAWG) says that Covid-19 pandemic has been highlighted among the key factors contributing to GBV cases.

Keghah says since the month of March, three hundred ninety two (392) cases in general have been recorded where by ninety (90) are physical violence cases, sixty two(62) emotion violence cases and one hundred thirteen (113) economic violence as well  as one hundred twenty seven (127) sexual violence cases in kasese only, adding that more are unreported.  

Keghah says in eliminating violence against women and girls, they have introduced start awareness support action (SASA) methodology which need a combined effort of all stakeholders avert the vice.

Meanwhile, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Commander SP Assimwe Samuel noted that domestic violence cases are highly increasing as a result of the Covid19 related lockdown and the floods.
