KIKUUBE RDC STOPS RECLAMATION ACTIVITIES IN THE WETLAND ALONG RIVER NGUSE

The Kikuube resident district commissioner Amlan Tumusiime has stopped reclamation activities that have been taking place in the wetland along river Nguse in Kabwoya Sub County.

The perpetrators of the acts sprayed the whole area with herbicides which dried up grasses and trees while others were cutting down trees for charcoal burning in the wetland along River Nguse.

There are others who planted rice and maize gardens.

Amlan Tumusiime stopped all these human activities saying that he is implementing the directive of the president on protection of wetlands.

More so section 55 of the environment act states that no one shall reclaim or drain a wetland without any written approval from relevant authorities

He has warned populist local politicians who may want to sabotage the campaign to restore wetlands.

Asked where they were when degradation took place, Amlan answered that what is more important is identifying a problem and addressing it.

Residents in charge of environment protection in Karama village attribute these activities to previous area leadership.

"I know this as wetland because when it rains the whole area get covered with water, but even planting that eucalyptus trees we had not been in leadership" - Wilbroad Musinguzi

Maxim Hakugizimana, the chairperson of local council one Karama village urges authorities to always force people found in wetlands to replant whatever is found degraded.

"The only punishment that can be given to encroachers should be told to restore what they destroyed on top of other constitutional charges, that is my opinion" - Maxim Hakugizimana, the chairperson local council one Karama
