Police in Kasese are investigating circumstances under which two people were buried in a gold mining quarry in Mushenene village, Nyakiyumbu sub-county in Kasese district.
Authorities say the two were among the four workers in this quarry who were fetching construction stones before they were buried by rain-softened debris.
Police in Kasese has confirmed the death of two people who were buried by debris in a stone quarry where they have been working.
Though the police are saying the deceased was constructing stones but residents and the area's local council are saying the deceased was mining gold.
The two are Bwambale Stephen 28 years and Mutebwa Edward 42 years who are among the four workers who had camped in the area to fetch construction stones.
The chairperson of Lc3 Nyakiyumbu sub-county Mr. Peter Kakule attributes the challenge to the heavy rains affecting the strength of the soils.
Kiribwango Wilson the Lc1 chairperson of Mushenene village says the activity was not known to him as a leader and people neighboring it.
Salt tv speaking to Mahoru Mariam the owner of the house neighboring this gold mining quarry said these people put her house in danger because any time is collapsing.
She added if they fail to fill up their gold mining hall will take them to courts of law.
Peter Kakule the Lc3 chairperson of Nyakiyumbu sub-county says that much as it was an illegal activity, it has been generating a livelihood for the workers. He however advises those who still have intentions of working in the quarry to shy away until the dry spell.
Authorities are now advising the public to consider safe and guided operations in such fields.
This is not the first time such incidents are happening in Kasese. Most of the incidents have been in disguise of mining minerals.
