Protests have erupted in Turkey after authorities detained the mayor of Istanbul, just days before he was due to be selected as a presidential candidate.

Ekrem Imamoglu, from the secular Republican People's Party (CHP), is seen as one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's strongest political rivals.

A Connecticut man whose stepmother allegedly held him captive for 20 years escaped by setting fire to the small room he was held in, officials said. 

Authorities responded to the fire and rescued the emaciated 32-year-old man. The alleged captive weighed 68 pounds (30 kilograms) upon his escape and was treated for smoke inhalation.

 

At least 15 people have been injured and more than 100 arrested in Argentina after football fans and retirees clashed with police.

The protest in Buenos Aires, the country’s capital is against economic policies implemented by President Javier Milei, including pension cuts.

Riot police in Buenos Aires used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators angered by the government’s move.

Authorities said the injured were taken to hospital, among them a police officer who had been shot and a protester who had been hit in the head with a tear gas canister.

Retirees have been gathering each week to protest against cuts to their pensions, which have dried up since libertarian Milei took office in late 2023.

 

The Kremlin says President Putin has been told Russian forces are in the final stage of the operation to drive Ukraine from territory it seized across the border in Kursk.

Putin made a surprise visit to Kursk on Wednesday - the first since Ukraine's incursion last August - with Russian media reporting he ordered the military to "fully liberate" the region.

The head of Ukraine's military, Oleksandr Syrsky, also indicated that some of its troops were withdrawing from Kursk.

It comes as US officials are headed to Russia to discuss a potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says the country is "determined" to work "as quickly as possible" with its partners towards peace. Meanwhile, Putin has yet to comment on the offer.
