MarketGovernment efforts to reduce the number of illegal occupants in markets have intensified, as authorities move to identify who owns stalls.
In Wandegeya Market, 70 stalls have been identified as unoccupied, with some of the original occupants having long abandoned them. Wandegeya Market, located in Kawempe Division, is among the first modern markets to be constructed in the country.
The operation was led by Kampala deputy Resident City Commissioner, Godfrey Sserwadda, together with deputy RCC Kawempe Division, Sanyu Nassimbwa.
During the operation, some stalls were found to have been converted into food storage spaces, despite not being designated for that purpose. Authorities also discovered 30 more such cases.
Officials further inspected facilities meant for day care, clean water supply and toilets, along with drainage systems, most of which were found to be poorly maintained or neglected.
Some stalls intended for vendors have been taken over by money lenders who were collecting rent from vendors.
Traders have expressed concern over the negligence of the market master at Wandegeya, warning that many risk being evicted.
They also accuse the market management of poor handling of fire safety measures, saying the cooking stoves used in the market produce excessive smoke that damages goods.
Upon arrival, officials found the market offices closed, but traders say the inspection was prompted by ongoing enforcement operations.
