Ministry of Health to Screen Sickle Cell among Students in Institutions

The Ministry of Health has unveiled a new strategy aimed at strengthening the fight against sickle cell disease across Uganda.

Under the initiative, the ministry plans to begin widespread sickle cell screening among students in higher institutions of learning nationwide.

Dr. Martin Ojambo, the National Coordinator for the Sickle Cell Programme, said the initiative is intended to increase awareness and encourage early testing, enabling young people to make informed decisions before starting families.

Dr. Charles Ayume, Commissioner for Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Health, explained that the government's long-term goal is to reduce the number of children born with sickle cell disease through premarital and preconception screening, allowing prospective parents to know their sickle cell status.
