NRM Calls for New Applicants for EALA Vacant Seats

The election of Hon Denis Namara and Hon James Kakozze to the 12th Parliament of Uganda left their EALA seats vacant, prompting NRM members to contest for the positions.

Following the election of Hon Denis Namara and Hon James Kakozze to the 12th Parliament of Uganda, their seats in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) became vacant, prompting many within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to express interest in contesting for the two positions.

Today, the Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi, informed the media that they have reopened the process for interested individuals to express their interest in seeking the party's ticket for the EALA slots. Dr Odoi explained that the first round of applications, which took place in March, had reached a deadlock, which necessitated the fresh exercise.

All interested applicants are required to do the following immediately:

- Submit their expression of interest letters by July 1, 2026, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

- Pay a non-refundable application fee of Shs 2,000,000, although those who paid during the March round will not be required to pay again.

- Provide proof of having completed at least A-Level (S6) or its equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, and be of sound moral character.

Dr Tanga Odoi also clarified that those wishing to contest must not currently serve as government officials or Members of the 12th Parliament. The selection process will be conducted through the NRM Central Executive Committee, which will shortlist candidates before they are presented to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus for final approval.

Among other requirements, Dr Odoi stated that candidates must be Ugandan citizens, registered voters, and active members of the NRM party. Anyone seeking further clarification on the process is advised to stay tuned for more updates.

In a separate statement, Commissioner James Tweheyo announced that elections for Local Council Chairpersons (LC1 and LC2) as well as Women's Councils at the village level will take place on July 10, 2026, with all candidates expected to participate within the NRM electoral framework.
